The Election Commission of India on Monday declared the results of the assembly bypolls held on June 19 across four states, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Trinamool Congress (TMC) each securing a seat or more. AAP emerged victorious in two constituencies: Visavadar in Gujarat, where former state president Gopal Italia won by a margin of 75,942 votes, and Ludhiana West in Punjab, where Sanjeev Arora defeated Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu by 35,179 votes. The Congress secured the Nilambur seat in Kerala with Aryadan Shoukath defeating CPI(M) leader M Swaraj by over 77,737 votes. In Gujarat’s Kadi seat, BJP candidate Rajendra Chavda retained the seat by defeating Congress’ Ramesh Chavda with a margin of 99,752 votes. Meanwhile, in West Bengal’s Kaliganj constituency, TMC’s Alifa Ahmed scored a decisive win over BJP’s Ashish Ghosh with a margin of 1,02,759 votes.
The bypolls were necessitated by the deaths of incumbent MLAs in one seat each in Gujarat, West Bengal, and Punjab, while resignations led to polling in the Nilambur seat in Kerala and another seat in Gujarat. Voter turnout varied across constituencies, with Nilambur in Kerala recording the highest turnout at 75.27%, followed by Kaliganj in West Bengal at 73.36%. Kadi and Visavadar in Gujarat witnessed turnouts of 57.91% and 56.89%, respectively, while Ludhiana West in Punjab recorded the lowest at 51.33%.
